The breakthrough of cinematography partly depended on the novelty of a technique that was able to record and reproduce reality in life-like motion pictures. Although several pioneers hoped it could be applied to longer scenes for theatrical use, throughout the 19th century further development of the technique mostly concentrated on combinations with the stereoscope (introduced in 1838) and photography (introduced in 1839). These animated discs with an average of about 8 to 16 images were usually designed as endless loops (like many GIF animations), for home use as a hand-operated "philosophical toy". The technical principles of modern animation are based on the stroboscopic illusion of motion that was introduced in 1833 with stroboscopic discs (better known as the phenakistiscope). Illustrated children's books, caricature, political cartoons and especially comic strips are closely related to animation, with much influence on visual styles and types of humour. ![]() Techniques with fanciful three-dimensional moving figures include masks and costumes, puppetry and automata. Popular techniques with moving images before film include shadow play, mechanical slides, and mobile projectors in magic lantern shows (especially phantasmagoria). For instance, the first feature movie made on computers, without a camera, is The Rescuers Down Under (1990), but its style can hardly be distinguished from cel animation.Īnimated movies are part of ancient traditions in storytelling, visual arts and theatre. Some productions may be recognized as Flash animation, but in practice, computer animation with a relatively two-dimensional appearance, stark outlines and little shading, will generally be considered "traditional animation". Computer animation is mostly associated with a three-dimensional appearance with detailed shading, although many different animation styles have been generated or simulated with computers. Hand-drawn animation, mostly animation painted on cels, was the dominant technique throughout most of the 20th century and became known as traditional animation.Īround the turn of the millennium, computer animation became the dominant animation technique in most regions (while Japanese anime and European hand-drawn productions continue to be very popular). While the history of animation began much earlier, this article is concerned with the development of the medium after the emergence of celluloid film in 1888, as produced for theatrical screenings, television and (non-interactive) home entertainment.īetween 18, during the rise of the cinematic industry, several different animation techniques were re-invented or newly developed, including stop-motion with objects, puppets, clay or cutouts, and drawn or painted animation. ![]() For the history of computer animation, see History of computer animation. And nearly another 20 years after that, the so-called sequel trilogy started up, reuniting old friends and plot devices for the nostalgic blockbuster touchstone The Force Awakens. I don’t build with an IDE, so I just need to know what command-line args to pass to things. I use the Intel C/C++ compiler for our CPU code, and nvcc for the gpu code. When interfacing C and Fortran, it is important to remember that while arguments in C are passed by values, in Fortran they are passed by reference.I’ve read various threads in this forum, but none of them seem to actually point to a solution, so here’s my take on it. Since we are using standard Fortran, we will need to write the computation on the GPU using CUDA C. ! computing the reference solution on the CPU ! Allocate B using standard allocate call ! Double precision We will use the standard Fortran allocator for this one. B is an array that we will use to compute a reference solution on the CPU. Since we want to use the zero copy features on these two, we will allocate them with cudaHostAlloc. We need to do a couple of extra steps: call the CUDA allocator in C, and then pass the C pointer to Fortran using the function C_F_Pointer provided by the iso C bindings.Ī is the input array, C is the output array from the GPU computation. Since we are using a standard Fortran 90 compiler, we can't use the built in allocator ( it has no knowledge of pinned memory). This is achieved with calls to cudaHostGetDevicePointer. These are the pointers that we will pass to the CUDA kernels.

When Brody shouted "Goddamnit!" to Nazir several times over the phone, I wondered if it was a confession from the writers that yes, they've decided to go for the full Jack Bauer after all. If this were season one, I would be suspicious of the fact that Brody's fingerprints will be all over the pacemaker remote control, though in the season-two world of Homeland, it could just be that they won't take this into account.Īnd much of this episode was classic season-two daftness. Either Brody is still working with Nazir and this is all part of a bigger plan, or Nazir is setting Brody up to take the fall for Walden's death, as revenge. In this situation it is generally uncommon to talk about half-life in the first place, but sometimes people will describe the decay in terms of its "first half-life", "second half-life", etc., where the first half-life is defined as the time required for decay from the initial value to 50%, the second half-life is from 50% to 25%, and so on. In a decay process that is not even close to exponential, the half-life will change dramatically while the decay is happening. The term "half-life" is almost exclusively used for decay processes that are exponential (such as radioactive decay or the other examples above), or approximately exponential (such as biological half-life discussed below). ![]() In a first-order reaction the half-life of the reactant is ln(2)/ λ, where λ (also denoted as k) is the reaction rate constant. The applications of XR and green screen in film productionĭue to the benefits extended reality technology offers, it has been employed in film production. XR in film production is associated with many advantages, which will be discussed later in this article. The technology perfectly blends the virtual reality scene and real-life scene. The pre-configured virtual environment is generated by a graphic engine, and then it is displayed on a high-resolution LED screen display during the film shooting. ![]() These visual effects help the actor better visualize the scenes in the movie. The technology of extended reality uses LED screen display to develop visual effects. But in this article, I will discuss XR in the context of film production. Extended reality is used in many fields including, business, games, XR devices, etc. XR includes virtual reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Augmented reality (AR). XR, short for extended reality, refers to all real and virtual combined environments and human-machine interactions created with the help of computer technology. The article will present a fair comparison between XR and the green screen in film production. In this article, we will introduce a novel technique, which can change the way films are produced, i.e., LED wall display. Green screens have been widely used in film production, but there are many disadvantages and limitations. Thanks to the advanced visual effect technology, we can enjoy some amazing entertainment in the form of movies, such as Star Wars, The Avengers, Avatar, to name a few. But the use of visual effects has become quite normal since a few decades ago. The entertainment industry dates back many decades, and over time it has been through a lot of changes and improvements. ![]() And that snow can cause that light to bend in ways that really no other gases can. Another reason why people have seen pink or green lightning before is because it often gets bent by, really specifically, snow in the air. The same thing with lightning, even a couple feet of air can take away some of the colors and affect its appearance.īECCA: Yeah, absolutely, it can definitely change the way that that light is hitting our eyes, it can bend it in a way that we end up getting different colors. Some of the light colors get separated out so that sunset sun looks more red. The sun looks like a different color because the sunlight has to go through more air. But further away in the audience, it appears a little bit more purple because that light has gone through more air to get to your eyes.ĮRIC: Yeah, so it's the same as looking at a sunset. But when we are in the cage during the presentation in our Theater of Electricity, the lightning appears white because we're actually right next to it. I know Eric, you probably have experienced this too. The closer you are to the lightning, the less air has to go through and often will appear more white if you're really close. Since light moves through air, the further you are away, the more air it has to go through. But it also has to do a lot with kind of how close you are to the lightning. And that's one of the questions that we get all the time. So having a little bit less moisture in the air inside will cause our lightning to be so specifically consistent in that it's always kind of purple. So our air is more controlled than in a storm.īECCA: Yeah, we definitely control our humidity quite a bit. It's just smaller, and it's going through air. And our indoor lighting is the same thing as a lightning bolt outside in a storm. it really depends on what the air is made of, and what's in the air. The average across the Earth's atmosphere is like 70% nitrogen, 20-something percent oxygen, but there's carbon dioxide, there's argon, there's a bunch of other gases, there can be more of some in certain places, there can be moisture in the air, there can be dust in the air. And so having lightning kind of going through this one spot of air may have it look a little bit different, just depending on what's going on.ĮRIC: Yeah, there's no such thing as pure air because air is a mixture of gases. ![]() And depending on where you are, that may be different. And one of those conditions is what is in the air because air is made up of different things, different elements, pieces of dust or moisture in the air. And the color of that light depends on the air, really.īECCA: Yeah, there are so many factors that really go into what produces a certain color of lightning. What we're seeing is light from superheated air. So we explained that in the show: what lighting is. Of course, it can be a little bit different depending on the conditions.ĮRIC: Yes. And so it is really cool that it creates this amazing light, this flash that we see. Up to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit, maybe even more. And in doing so they end up heating the air where these charges get put back together to pretty extreme temperatures. So lightning essentially is just when charges get separated and come back together. So let's just start with what lightning actually is.īECCA: Sure. Honestly, sometimes that's the most satisfying when you can be like: that's the biggest animal. And it's not like other questions where we have a simple answer. And it's one that there isn't a really good clear cut answer to, but I still love to talk about it.ĮRIC: Yeah, there's a whole lot going on. Because by researching the answer, I learned a ton.īECCA: Yes, this question is one that we get all the time. Becca, thanks for joining me.ĮRIC: So the first time I got this question, I had some guesses. ![]() One of the most common we get after a show is: why is your lightning purple? Joining me to dig into this question is a fellow zapper, Becca from our education team. It has the world's largest Van de Graaff generator, musical Tesla coils, and it inspires some great questions. And one of my favorite things about my job is presenting a lightning show in our Thomson Theater of Electricity.
